Interesting research results during Timing Taste launch in Spain
Thursday, 3 December 2009
The relation between the colour stage and the commercial shelf life differs per variety. This can be concluded after a five year research conducted by the University of Almeria with a number of test varieties.
Some of the details of this study were presented at the 2009 Enza Zaden Housefair in Spain during which, after the kick-off of 10 November in the Netherlands, the Timing Taste campaign was also launched in this Mediterranean country.
More than 80 participants from a number of European countries were present at the Housefair. This event combined the launch of Timing Taste with visits to the demo greenhouse and interesting presentations about the timing in marketing, supermarket trends and variety information.
Vernal, a Mediterranean tasting tomato
During this Housefair, the newest varieties were presented in the Enza Zaden demo greenhouse. One of the most outstanding varieties was Vernal, a variety that is quickly gaining market share for its unique possibilities to market the product in a green through red stage. Thanks to the firm fruits Vernal produces, it is an ideal tomato for export all over Europe. This variety offers many marketing opportunities and is also very suitable for the export market.
From a technological perspective, Vernal is special because of its very low loss of weight, which was also measured by the University of Murcia. It’s less than 4% in 4 days, whereas other varieties can easily loose between 5 and 10%. This is a great advantage when the product is processed.
In the next few months, the Enza Zaden website

will present more details of the Timing Taste activities and the research mentioned above. Moreover, Enza Zaden will inform the importance of the research through their Timing Taste newsletter.
