Successful open days at Enza Zaden

Monday, 8 September 2008

Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th of September Enza Zaden organised the international open days for lettuce at Allonnes in France. Growers, traders and the processing industry were present in large numbers: almost 200 in total from England, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Norway and of course France.

In total Enza Zaden showed about 200 varieties, among which a series of Eazy leaf-varieties. These were again of great interest and received positive feed-back from the processing industry. Especially the improved keeping qualities, the uniformity of leaf and the possibility to harvest the heads by machine are highly appreciated. The main varieties in this segment are Ezra, Ezteban and Ezmina.

Next to the Eazy leaf-program there was also much interest for a number of other lettuce varieties. For instance iceberg lettuce, in which Enza Zaden is top of the range with leading commercial varieties for northern growing conditions and with a new, very successful program in Spain. And this also applies to the batavia- and cos-lettuce market in Europe: a comprehensive assortment of innovative, new varieties satisfying the latest market requirements. One should remember how proud Enza Zaden France was, when last year they developed red cos lettuce, which looked like lamb's lettuce. This very successful program has recently been extended by a new variety: Redza.
