Enkhuizen, The Netherlands (Fulltime)
Our Seed Pathology Research team has an internship opportunity where you can conduct your own research on diseases in pepper and tomato. Are you eager to learn about disease epidemiology? And do you want to work with the latest techniques? Than this internship might be suited for you.
Fruity crops, including tomato and pepper are important crops for Enza Zaden. During the past decade, pospiviroid detections have been reported worldwide. Import regulations in several countries require that imported tomato and pepper seeds are free of pospiviroids. This is accomplished by monitoring seed production and by testing the seeds.
In this research, the focus is on understanding the epidemiology of pospiviroids. You will investigate how and if infected plant debris remains in the soil as a possible infection source and based on these results you will come up with a prevention plan. Next to that, you will gain insight in the in plant distribution of pospiviroids and develop optimal sampling strategies for early detection of pospiviroid infection in tomato and pepper plants. The experiments take place in the greenhouse as well as in the seed health laboratory of Enza Zaden in Enkhuizen.
This internship enables you to develop your own research hypothesis, to carry out experiments, and to investigate disease epidemiology. You gain experience in planning and performing greenhouse experiments, seed quality testing techniques and data analyses.
At the end of your internship, you will present your results, conclusions, and recommendations to the department. Besides learning new technical skills, this experience gives you the opportunity to contribute to corporate applied research of an international vegetable breeding and seed producing company.
You are a diligent person with affinity for plant biology/pathology, or horticulture/agronomy.
Enza Zaden is a vegetable breeding company that develops vegetable varieties. We produce and sell the seeds of these varieties all over the world. Both for conventional and organic growers.
Our goal is to grant people access to healthy vegetables. Anywhere in the world. Every day, more than 460 million people worldwide eat our vegetables. So, we are getting there ... but there is still enough work to be done! Of course, we look further than present needs. In 2050, when there will be about 10 billion inhabitants on our planet, we also want to make sure that people have access to healthy vegetables.
To achieve this, our vegetable breeders work with the best that nature offers. Supported by state-of-the-art technologies to speed up our breeding process. And that is really necessary, because currently the development of a new vegetable variety takes at least 6 years. We focus on higher yield, resistance to diseases and pests and climate extremes such as heat and drought. And on taste, shelf life and nutrients. The results? Strong, healthy tasty and climate-proof vegetable varieties with higher yield per square meter and less need of crop protection products or fertilizer. In short, sustainability is truly in our DNA.
Our head office in Enkhuizen is our home base, but we have colleagues all over the world. Enza Zaden is an independent family business, where around 2000 employees from more than 40 nationalities closely work together in international teams.
