Enkhuzien, The Netherlands (Fulltime)
full-time internship at BSc level for 6 months starting in April.
The insect Onion thrips (Thrips tabaci, Lindeman) can do great damage to onions and leek. Pesticides are currently the main control strategy to deal with this pest. However, we want to use the natural defense system of onions and leek. Will you help us developing strong and resistant onions and leeks?
You will manage an independent research project and will present your findings to the onion and leek teams. You will study onion and leek lines in order to find resistant genotypes and to identify the key traits that allow them to be resistant, or at least tolerant, to thrips.
You will be involved with all aspects of insect field experiments. You will gain experience in managing field plots and you will become familiar with damage caused by thrips in onion and leek.
Furthermore, you will investigate the metabolites make up involved in resistance and/or tolerance to thrips. You will also initiate thrips screening under controlled environment.
You will work under guidance of an Entomologist and a Biochemist. Most of the study will take place at our research headquarters in the Netherlands (Enkhuizen). The internship will be from April to September 2018.
You are interested in insects and their interaction with plants. You will be fully responsible of your own project, so a high degree of self-motivation and self-initiative is essential. In addition, you are able to work well with others and to align your research with related projects.
You have good communication and interpersonal skills along with strong computer skills. Previous research experience is preferred, but not required. Finally you are willing to spend one month of the internship at our research station in Italy.
• In final year of hbo bachelor study biology or a related field.
• Basic knowledge of entomology and biochemistry.
We are an independent vegetable seed company, breeding, producing and marketing our varieties all over the world. There's a good chance that you'll find our tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, lettuce or other vegetables on your plate, no matter where you are.
At our company, innovation and taking pleasure in our work are essential. This internship is a great chance to do research in a dynamic environment and to acquire knowledge in practice.
