Enkhuizen, The Netherlands (Fulltime)
Full-time internship at BSc or MSc level for 5-6 months starting in April/May 2018
Our Seed Production Research team has an internship opportunity where you can conduct your own research from hypothesis to presentation. Are you eager to learn about seed quality in relation to fruit maturity? And do you want to work with the latest techniques? Apply now!
Seed Production Research investigates factors affecting seed production of open field crops and fruity crops. Within Enza Zaden we are responsible for the development, implementation and validation of seed and pollen protocols that contribute to increased seed yield and seed quality.
Seed set and seed quality are important aspects of sweet pepper seed production for Enza Zaden. In general, mature fruits are harvested to yield the best seed quality. However, a clear relationship between fruit maturity and seed quality is hard to predict, as many different factors play a role.
You are going to characterize objective fruit-maturity parameters and investigate concomitant changes in seed quality using advanced techniques.
You will start with a detailed literature search on the topic that will help you define the final goals and deliverables of your internship. You will work in the greenhouse determining fruit and seed maturity parameters (not at the molecular level). You are responsible for the data acquisition and analyses for obtaining seed quality.
This research enables you to develop a research hypothesis, to carry out experiments, and to investigate parameters that determine fruit maturity and evaluate seed quality. You gain experience in planning and performing greenhouse experiments, seed quality testing techniques, data analyses, and statistics.
At the end of your internship, you will present your results, conclusions, and recommendations to the department. Besides learning new technical skills, this experience gives you the opportunity to contribute to corporate applied research of an international vegetable breeding and seed producing company.
You are a diligent person with affinity for plant biology/physiology, or horticulture/agronomy.
• In the last year of your BSc or MSc degree for example in plant or biological sciences, or in horticulture/agronomy
• Good level of English, able to report and present in English
• In possession of a driver’s license
• Non-smoker due to risk of crop contamination by virus
We are an independent vegetable seed company, breeding, producing and marketing our varieties all over the world. There's a good chance that you'll find our tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, lettuce or other vegetables on your plate, no matter where you are.
At our company, innovation and taking pleasure in our work are essential. This internship is a unique opportunity to do research in a dynamic environment and to acquire knowledge in practice.
