Spinach is an open field crop grown in a lot of different environments. Every environment and market has its own requirements. Breeding and screening activities located in several countries – such as the Netherlands, France, Italy, Australia and the USA – help Enza Zaden to select varieties in the main production regions, where local market adaptation and dynamic resistance are key to success.
Our breeding programme aims to develop varieties for all market segments; the fresh (babyleaf) market, bunching market as well as frozen and canned products. We develop varieties within the main types: smooth, savoyed and oriental types. The spinach market is growing with high pace worldwide and improved genetics is contributing to a large extend.
