Are you the link between breeders and researchers?

To reinforce the validation and implementation of strategic traits in the Cucumber Breeding department we are looking for a Junior Biotech Breeder Cucumber.

What are you going to do as a Junior Biotech Breeder Cucumber?

You analyse different types of data (phenotypic and genotypic) to develop markers for strategic traits in cucumber. You support the Cucumber Breeding team with marker-assisted backcross projects of strategic traits. You are responsible for the development of pre-breeding material that provides our cucumber breeders with high-quality breeding material. You play a central role in the process: from the molecular data generated in the lab via the phenotyping in the field or greenhouse to the (complex) data analysis and back. Thanks to your excellent planning and communication skills, you generate quality data and connect to the research team and breeders.

You are part of the Cucumber Breeding department, consisting of experienced breeders, assistants and technicians. The common goal is an innovative and high-quality range of cucumber varieties for our customers.

You will work closely together with colleagues of other departments, ranging from biotech breeders of different crops to molecular researchers, phytopathologists and data scientists.

You report to the Senior Biotech Breeder Cucumber.

You are passionate about genetics. In your work as a Junior Biotech Breeder you can work independently and accurate in order to translate scientific information into applications for a business environment. Your natural curiosity drives you to investigate and come to conclusions followed by practical and timely advice. You come up with creative solutions fitting the situational needs. Your attitude is analytic and proactive.

Your flexible mindset allows you to switch between activities and reprioritise when needed. Thanks to your excellent communication skills, you connect easily with people on multiple levels and take a position based on relevant arguments for improvements in the process chain. You have experience with project management involving different parties.

Travelling abroad (2-3 times a year) will be part of the job.

In short, you:

  • have an MSc degree (for example in Plant Science or Biotechnology);
  • have good communication skills in English, proficiency in Dutch is a pre;
  • have experience in the field of genetics/plant breeding and biotechnology, especially in molecular biology and markers.
