Are you the link between breeders and researchers to reinforce the validation and implementation of strategic traits in the Cucurbits Breeding department.
What are you going to do?
You support the Cucurbits Breeding team with marker-assisted backcross projects of strategic traits. You are responsible for the development of pre-breeding material that provides our Cucurbits breeders with high-quality breeding material. You play a central role in the process: from the molecular data generated in the lab via the phenotyping in the field or greenhouse to the (complex) data analysis and back. Thanks to your excellent planning and communication skills, you generate quality data and connect to the research team and breeders. You analyse different types of data (phenotypic and genotypic) to develop markers for strategic traits in Cucurbits.
You are part of the Cucurbits Breeding department, consisting of experienced breeders. The common goal is an innovative and high-quality range of Cucurbits varieties for our customers.
You will work closely together with colleagues of other departments, ranging from biotech breeders of different crops to molecular researchers and crop workers in the greenhouse.
You report to the Senior Biotech Breeder Cucurbits.
You are passionate about genetics and enjoy analysing and improving processes. In your work as a (Junior) Biotech Breeder you can work independently and accurately in order to translate scientific information into applications for a business environment.
Your natural curiosity drives you to investigate and come to conclusions followed by practical and timely advice. You come up with creative solutions fitting the situational needs. Your attitude is analytic and proactive.
Your flexible mindset allows you to switch between activities and reprioritise when needed. Thanks to your excellent communication skills, you connect easily with people on multiple levels and take a position based on relevant arguments for improvements in the process chain. You have experience with project management involving different parties.
Travelling abroad (1-2 times a year) will be part of the job.
In short, you:
- have an MSc degree (for example in Plant Science or Biotechnology);
- have good communication skills in English, proficiency in Dutch is a pre;
- have excellent planning skills with a strong sense of urgency to meet deadlines and get things done;
- are a process minded and highly organized individual with attention to details, quality and continuous improvements;
- have experience in the field of genetics/plant breeding, biotechnology, molecular biology and markers.
