Global Tomato Congress 2021

Let’s talk tomatoes!

Tuesday 16 March the virtual edition of the Global Tomato Congress takes place. A full day of online learning and networking. You will find the best and the brightest business minds from the fresh tomato business here. Enza Zaden is proud sponsor of this event. Also, we contribute to the program. Our colleague Kees Könst (Crop Research Director) participates in the panel discussion ‘Breeding better tomatoes’.

Breeding better tomatoes with HR resistance to ToBRFV

Together with representatives of John Innes Centre, Syngenta and Semillas Fitó, Kees Könst will talk about what the tomatoes of tomorrow offer in terms of improved sustainability. Enza Zaden’s recent discovery of the gene that provides resistance to the devastating ToBRFV virus will be one of the topics of this discussion. “With tomato varieties that are highly resistant to ToBRFV we can eradicate the virus, because it can’t enter the plant and multiply,” says Kees.

“Because there is a lot at stake for our customers, we worked very hard to find a solution to this devastating virus. Now that we have discovered the answer, we keep on working hard to develop tomato varieties that are highly ToBRFV resistant. We expect to have these ready in the coming years.”
