Creating value for melon customers

Creating value for melon customers

Enza Zaden is creating value for our melon customers through innovation and collaboration, and requires links between all the processes from production right through the supply chain. We are continuously looking for new solutions to meet the challenges and market demands, such as better internal quality, flavour and year round production. Our breeders and biotechnologists have been working hard to provide a great range in all segments including the Amarillo, Piel de Sapo and Galia types.

Taste is key in melon

Sweetness, juiciness and the aroma of melons are the key buying criteria for customers when they think of melons and watermelons. At Enza Zaden we focus specifically on the taste and juiciness of our melons when developing new varieties, while not forgetting the sustainability of production, high-yielding and good shelf-life varieties being the foundation of our success with our melon portfolio.

The consumer is always right. That’s why it is crucial to obtain early insights into the “taste reports” for new varieties. Some properties, such as the sugar content of the fruits, are easy to determine objectively, but the taste experience is about more than just sugar. To provide a clearer picture of the complex entirety of taste, texture and consistency, we always submit our varieties and those of our closest competitors to taste panels. These may be internal, consisting of our own staff, or external, made up of consumers who have a good sense of taste. And because preferences can differ, we do this across different countries.

Fully netted types cornerstone for Australia

Our fully netted melons are the cornerstone of our melon portfolio for Australia. The firm and sweet orange flesh is a staple in Aussie households over summer for fruit salads or the Christmas grazing table. Our variety Karameza has a concentrated fruit set, the ability to hold in the field and early sugar content. Karameza loves the heat, making this variety an excellent fit for spring and summer crop. Harvest indicators such as cracking around the peduncle ensure the best fruit quality for consumers. The creamy colour catches the eye, and Karameza stands out for its exceptional fruit uniformity and flavour. The perfect variety for long shipments.

Kazta, the smaller sister to Karameza, is perfect for storage. With its extra-long shelf-life, and a very well balanced sweetness and acidity, with excellent uniformity in fruit size.
