Chasing Difference

Breeding for 85 years

1960-1985...

‘If you do the same thing as everyone else, you get the same results’.

To find a unique angle as a small seed company among all the big companies, Piet Mazereeuw decided not to follow the usual approach in breeding of his teachers in Wageningen. He went down a different path, exploring new possibilities in vegetable seed breeding and curious to find out what the results would be. He was chasing difference, both in the most promising varieties, and in his way of working. And it did indeed make a difference! It is still the driving factor behind the success of Enza Zaden.

A gold star is born

A sweet yellow pepper. That doesn’t sound very special, but it was! In 1980 we presented the first yellow sweet pepper to the Netherlands. Before the launch of Goldstar, a good variety of sweet peppers had not yet been developed, making the playing field wide open. The launch of Goldstar filled this gap in the market, and sweet peppers for other European production areas soon followed.
