Carrot - Enza Zaden expands its product portfolio by acquiring carrot breeding program from German company Carosem

A strategic move

As of July 1, 2023, vegetable breeding company Enza Zaden has acquired a carrot breeding program from the German company Carosem. This strategic move allows Enza Zaden to expand its product portfolio by adding a new crop: carrot.

This long term investment fits into the purpose of Enza Zaden: breeding to feed the world, creating value for sustainable life and living. The acquisition comprises a carrot breeding program, several commercial varieties and inventory. It does not involve any transfer of personnel. The integration of this new breeding program and the commercial varieties will require expansion of the existing organization.

Enza Zaden is renowned for its development of vegetable varieties across 34 international and local crops. By introducing the new crop carrot, we are further diversifying our portfolio, which already includes amongst others lettuce, tomato, onion, melon, (sweet) pepper and cucumber.

Jaap Mazereeuw, Chief Executive Officer at Enza Zaden: “This is an exciting development as it allows us to add a new crop to our product portfolio. We trust that with this acquisition we will even better serve our customers' needs and increase our market presence. Although developing new carrot varieties can be a process that spans up to ten years, we aspire to become a leading player in the carrot market in the long run.”

Andreas Muller, CEO Carosem:

“We are very happy that our carrot breeding program can now be further expanded under the umbrella of Enza Zaden. We are confident that as a respected worldwide player in vegetable breeding they will further develop our well developed program successfully.”
