Working together for a more efficient production

In today’s challenging market, efficiency in production is not just a goal; it's a necessity. Increasing labor costs, shortages in resources, and extreme climate changes are forcing the industry to rethink how to be efficient and profitable. Being at the very start of the produce chain, we as a breeding company can help enhance efficiency in production by breeding portfolios and varieties that perform better by optimizing plant protection, using fewer inputs, and saving costs, ensuring that our customers can achieve higher yields with fewer resources.

Enhancing Efficiency in production

At Enza Zaden, we understand the industry’s challenges, and this is why we are committed to breeding portfolios that help enhance Efficiency in Production (EIP).

Our efforts focus on several key areas:

  • Resilient Varieties: We are constantly working towards developing resistant varieties and portfolios that focus on traits enhancing resilience, resource utilization, and minimizing costs. This means that our breeding efforts select varieties that are better equipped to withstand environmental stresses, ensuring consistent and reliable yields.
  • Optimized Resource Use: Efficiency means doing more with less by optimizing plant protection, the use of water, fertilizers, and land resources. Our goal is to keep breeding varieties that perform better with less input and less use of resources while maintaining high productivity.
  • Advanced Farming Techniques: Efficiency in production can also be achieved by using modern farming methods such as vertical farming, mechanical harvesting, and hydroponics. We are breeding specific portfolios that are adapted to these techniques.

Small differences, great changes

At Enza Zaden, we believe that even the smallest changes can make a big difference. Take tomato plants, for example: we know that time when collecting fruits is key to efficiency. This is why some of our tomato varieties are more labor-friendly: plant structure is more open, allowing for easier and faster recollection, saving time and money. In pumpkin, for example, mechanization in recollection is something more and more producers are starting to explore. As a breeding company, we develop varieties that are specifically adapted for mechanical harvest, maintaining the best quality and incredible yields.

We have also faced years in which resource prices fluctuated, being an important variable to economic returns. Breeding portfolios that are less dependent on fertilization inputs, as well as water, are key to facing these new challenges. In onion, for example, our breeding team is focusing on developing varieties that perform better with less water. The same goes for kohlrabi; the aim is to develop varieties that maintain yield and quality while relying less on fertilizers.
