Information
Our colleague from the commercial team, Manolo Ruíz, interviewed Miguel Amezcua, a grower from the Níjar area in Almería, who showed us his greenhouse where he cultivates our HREZ Portomarín variety, grafted onto Stromboli, our HREZ rootstock.
Miguel: Well, yes, Portomarín has pleasantly surprised me with its strength and size. I planted Portomarín on August 16th and to date, I have harvested around 3.5 kg, which has made the cooperative I am a member of very happy due to its uniform size and intense red color.
Miguel: From an agronomic point of view, Portomarín stands out for being a very strong plant, with large leaves and rapid growth. The clusters are long and maintain a uniform size from the base to the top, without shrinking as happens with other varieties. Additionally, the high resistance of Portomarín is crucial to avoid ToBRFV, which spreads easily through the soil.
Miguel: I decided to graft onto Stromboli, a variety with High Resistance to ToBRFV because it protects the plant from the root, ensuring a longer cultivation cycle. The combination of Portomarín with the Stromboli rootstock offers complete protection both in the aerial part and in the soil, providing an extra layer of defence against ToBRFV. This combination has proven to keep the plant strong and productive. Additionally, in terms of production, this combination has shown very good results, so I will surely repeat it next season.
