At Enza Zaden, we love innovations. The world is constantly evolving, and we can only welcome exciting new ways of growing vegetables. Like vertical farms: a small but growing segment of growers taking it to the next level.
Vertical farming is a closed cultivation system with several cultivation layers on top of each other. In other words, a cultivation flat where lettuces and other green leaves particularly thrive. As a grower, you need less space, and you can grow anywhere in the world 24/7, under the right growing conditions, usually without pesticides. You do need (a lot of) electricity for it, though, as well as the right crops because the conditions in an open field are very different from those in a vertical farm.
That's where we come in. Genetically, it is all in the details of whether a variety is suitable for this type of cultivation. We, therefore, crossbreed very specifically in lettuce varieties that can withstand varying lighting, have a reliable growth rate, a good yield and a nice structure. After extensive research and breeding programmes, we have developed a nice range of leafy varieties that have met our high bar. Beautiful varieties, perfectly suited for a vertical life.
