In the town of Oudtshoorn, in the Western Cape Province Enza Zaden South Africa was established and serves as a seed production facility. This location lies at the centre of South Africa’s vegetable seed production region and is extremely important for the production of outdoor crops, especially onions.
Various seed crops are produced by third-party, partner companies. The seed produced in this way are packaged and distributed directly to local and international customers or shipped to Enza Zaden in the Netherlands.
In 2012 Westcape Biotech (Pty) Ltd in Stellenbosch in South Africa, was established. Westcape Biotech was originally a joint venture with the innovative Expressive Research, a biotechnological company that is active in the fields of cell and tissue culture and molecular diagnostics. On 28 May 2018, Enza Zaden Beheer B.V. purchased the other 50% shares in Westcape Holdings (Pty) Ltd. (further Westcape) from venture partner Expressive Research B.V. This means that Enza Zaden is now the sole owner of this company.
Westcape produces double haploids in pepper and cucumber for Enza Zaden, and executes different multiplication activities for several third parties.After the takeover, Westcape is a full R&D station of Enza Zaden and continues under the name Enza Zaden South Africa Research & Development. It will contribute to realising our strategic vision, especially running specific activities supporting our breeding departments.
On 1 August 2017 the subsidiary Enza Zaden South Africa Commercial (Pty) Ltd began selling seeds directly to its customers. With its headquarters based in Centurion and a good team the company distributes its products throughout the country and offers its customers local and international support.
The establishment of a subsidiary in South Africa provides direct contact to the Enza Zaden brand and ensures close relationships to meet local customer needs.
