Squash

We are family

Zucchini, courgette, summer squash - they all belong to the same family of Cucurbitaceae. And at Enza Zaden we love them all. From the short, white Middle Eastern types used for stuffing, to the more familiar long, dark green cylindrical types we see on the supermarket shelves in Europe and North America. Whatever customers use them for, they need to have reliable yield & fruit quality. The plants need to have an excellent plant balance and virus resistance package.

Our specialists are constantly refining every aspect of squash breeding, with a strong focus on resistance breeding - a cornerstone of the future success of our squash program. Without resistance to the most common and damaging viruses, growers simply cannot achieve a reliable, high-quality crop. That’s why we take pride in developing varieties that empower squash growers with the resilience and dependability they need to succeed.

Breeding programs

Fruit type is a big deal in breeding - after all, squash preferences are as diverse as those who enjoy them. That’s no small challenge, but we are making sure that our work covers the full spectrum of this versatile crop group, ensuring there's squash for every plate. To tackle the specific needs of local consumption styles, we've set up dedicated breeding programs for each of the 15 commercially significant squash types. These teams collaborate closely, trading ideas and breakthroughs like members of one big, innovative family. This way, we deliver a selection of universal varieties tailored to regional tastes, satisfying markets around the world.
