New HR varieties against Nasonovia Nr:1

A powerful weapon

High Resistant to nasonovia nr:0-1

Last autumn, we were one of the first seed companies to launch resistant iceberg lettuce varieties that are effective against Nasonovia Nr:1. The preliminary laboratory results are very promising. The first large fields with the new varieties will soon be visible.

Built-in resistance: part of an integrated approach

The built-in resistance – “the protection starts from within” – does not offer an all- encompassing solution against aphids, but it does form an essential part of an integrated approach to tackling this persistent issue. New biological methods and crop protection solutions are continually being developed to address challenges in a targeted manner. In collaboration with various parties, efficient strategies are being explored for managing Nasonovia ribisnigri.

Comprehensive resistance package provides double protection

What sets these new HR varieties apart is their comprehensive resistance package. The varieties have full Bremia resistance (Bl:29-41EU) as well as HR: Nr:0;1. This means the lettuce is not only protected against Nasonovia Nr:0;1, but also offers resistance to various other relevant threats. This provides double protection against the main risks growers face when cultivating lettuce crops in the open field.

HR standards and distinguishing features

After months of extensive testing, it has been established that the resistance meets the standards of the International Seed Federation (ISF) regarding High Resistance.
Benchmark results show that Enza Zaden performs strongly in several areas and that the new varieties meet the ISF’s HR standards in practice. This enables growers to rely on high-quality and reliable crops that contribute to a sustainable solution against threats such as Nasonovia Nr:1.

Commercial availability and benefits for growers

The first resistant iceberg lettuce variety Lenovia (E01E.13418) is characterised by robust growth, an attractive round shape, and an extensive resistance package against aphids and Bremia. From 1 May, it will be widely available through established distribution channels. Further variety introductions with this extensive resistance are planned for May.
