Nasonovia ribisnigri, commonly known as the lettuce aphid, is a major pest affecting lettuce crops globally. It damages plants by extracting sap and transmitting viruses, leading to distorted leaves, stunted growth, lower yields, and rejection from retailers. Its rapid reproduction makes traditional control methods less effective plus EU restrictions on chemical pest management are leaving growers with fewer tools to fight Nr:1.
EU regulations are phasing out chemical controls, leaving lettuce growers seeking IPM strategies and trialing biocontrols. Retailers’ strict aphid tolerance is putting pressure on producers, particularly in whole-head and processing markets where visual quality is key.
We’re introducing new iceberg varieties with Resistance to NR:1 which, together with other aphid control tools such as crop protection solutions, offer producers one valuable tool in the fight against Nasonovia. Our varieties also incorporate our most complete resistance package: Full Bremia (Bl:29-41) and HR: NR:0.
