3 July 2026 News
The International Bremia Evaluation Board Europe (IBEB-EU) has announced that no new Bremia lactucae races have been denominated in 2026. Following the evaluation of 381 isolates collected across Europe between 2025 and early 2026, the board concluded that no distinctive new threats have emerged in the field. The most recent races Bl:38EU, Bl:39EU, Bl:40EU and Bl:41EU remain the most relevant for lettuce production today.
This confirms that the current resistance landscape continues to provide strong resistant portfolios are working against the most important Bremia races present in commercial production. At the same time, it highlights the importance of ongoing monitoring and innovation to stay ahead of future challenges.
Now more than ever, resistant portfolios gain importance as they are the only solution in the fight against Bremia. Our leafy portfolios offer full Bremia resistance from Bl:29EU to Bl:41EU while guaranteeing excellent agronomic performance. This ensures that producers are equipped with reliable, sustainable solutions to protect their crops and maximize yield, even under increasing disease pressure.
At Enza Zaden, resistance breeding is a core part of our commitment to helping growers produce healthy, reliable crops. Through continuous research, extensive field testing and close monitoring of Bremia developments, we work to deliver varieties that combine strong disease resistance with excellent agronomic performance.
Resistance remains one of the most effective tools in integrated disease management. When combined with good crop hygiene and responsible crop protection strategies, resistant varieties help growers reduce risk, protect yields and improve crop reliability.
While no new race has been identified this year, vigilance remains essential. The Bremia population continues to evolve, and close collaboration between seed companies, researchers and growers remains key to maintaining effective and durable disease control.
Our resistant portfolios are designed to offer growers a comprehensive defence against downy mildew, helping prevent the development and spread of new Bremia races.
