Cultivating peace of mind in Poniente: Juan Antonio Rodríguez’s experience with HREZ Varieties

In the ongoing battle against Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV), growers are constantly seeking solutions that not only mitigate the impact of this pervasive threat but also ensure the prosperity and viability of their tomato crops. Among these solutions, High Resistance (HREZ) varieties and rootstocks like HREZ Baffin stand out as beacons of hope and efficacy. Today, we delve into the real-life experience of Juan Antonio Rodriguez, a grower who has embraced these innovative solutions.

A leap of faith into High Resistance

For growers like Juan Antonio Rodríguez, the decision to transition to HREZ varieties was driven by a quest for peace of mind and a vision for the future. Witnessing the devastating effects of ToBRFV on neighboring farms, Rodríguez chose to proactively protect his operations by adopting Enza Zaden's HREZ varieties. This move not only reduced the incidence of ToBRFV on his operation but also reinforced his belief that HREZ varieties could be the key to eradicating the virus altogether.

Juan Antonio Rodríguez, a grower from the Poniente area, shares his journey with HREZ varieties and the peace of mind they bring in combating ToBRFV.

"The rugose virus impacted those close to me - family and friends - and honestly, it was catastrophic for them, both economically and in terms of cultivation, as it stained most of their tomatoes. I opted for High Resistance, mainly for the peace of mind. I grafted on the rootstock from Enza Zaden too, because it provides peace of mind and is believed to provide the necessary strength for the plant to stay strong throughout the cultivation. I am among those who will switch to planting High Resistance varieties on, if not 80 to 90 percent, then 100 percent of my operations, which cover 14 hectares. Because, in the end, it brings peace of mind knowing that the crop cycle will be completed successfully." - Juan Antonio Rodríguez

Juan Antonio’s story is a testament to the effectiveness of HREZ varieties in combating ToBRFV and ensuring the success of tomato cultivation. His journey from uncertainty to peace of mind highlights the potential of innovative agricultural solutions in transforming the future of cultivation.
